Dairy cows farming: cattle are missing certain trace minerals... if you look at some farms you will notice that most of the wooden fences have been chewed on. This is not because of a need to chew, but because the animals are missing certain forms of minerals. It took a while to figure out what they were and in what form they need to be, but never the less I figured it out. Milk weight loss: cows can give much milk without loosing weightThe people at the animal research station were not interested even though they had come to my farm several times to try to figure out what I was doing. My cows were producing large amounts of milk and not loosing any weight. This was because of the food intake. After they had weighed and measured what my cows were eating in order to gain weight instead of loosing it they decided that it was impossible for them to eat that much and that it was just a fluke. They said that in all the tests that they have done there was a limit on what a cow could consume for a given weight. A problem with trace mineral researchThey just kept going over things looking for mistakes instead of listening to what I was trying to explain to them. I tried to explain it to them but it went over their heads. Too much education in the wrong direction, they could not deny what was happening they just could not explain it and did not want my explanation. It still baffles me today how narrow-minded people can become. They did send other dairy farmers who had production problems to me. However, they did not get it either. It is so simple. <...> Problem in dairy farming - more milk less weightThe thing is they [cows from Klaus' herd] were producing large amounts of milk. Cows can produce 10 gallons and more a day. That causes them to loose a lot of weight. The problem is that they can't eat enough food to supply them with what they need and so they start to lose weight. At some point, they will slow down milk production because they are just worn out. Therefore, the research people work on ways to change protein so that it can be absorbed faster. This and other things do help but do not solve the problem. And you can't exactly turn the milk off. How Klaus arrived at the solution of a "milk - weight loss" problemSo one night we had some guests we had mashed potatoes and roast everyone ate until we where stuffed. I couldn’t eat one more bite of potatoes I was that stuffed. As it turned out we had desert and they had brought desert also. The fact is that even though I was so stuffed that I could not eat one bite of potatoes I was able to eat two desserts and coffee. That’s when it hit me. Dairy cow feeding solution: three to five course meals!Three to five course meals. See even when you’re stuffed of one thing you can always find room for something else. That was the trick. I gave my cows a four-course meal in the morning, a three-course meal at noon and five-course meal at night. The result was that they where able to eat 30% more food than what was statistically proven to be the maximum per body weight. Simple… my cows gained weight and produced large amounts of milk for long periods of time. What's the problem with those dairy farming researchers? What they could not understand or did not want to acknowledge was that a cow is just like us when it comes to food. The bottom line was that they said that what my cows where eating was impossible and that was that. Anyway, the fence-chewing thing went much the same way. It took a long time to figure out what minerals they were missing but in the end I was told that cows do not need those minerals, “Whatever”! I told them. From "Living on Love -- The Shameful Secret" Chapter 8 Readers show interest in dairy cows farming trace minerals informationKostya: surprised to get a qualified feedback on diary cows farming so quickly(April 17, 2005) The materials on this page about simple yet unknown issues of milk production on a farm seem to be out of place among the other stuff -- books on Love, winning money and meditation. Still I loved a mark of a practical genius in how Klaus solved problems when he owned a farm -- and I wanted to give this information on using right trace minerals in dairy cows farming to those who can use it. So on April 10, 2005 I created this page and placed material on Klaus Joehle dairy cows farming trace minerals concentrance into issue 18 of "Living on Love news and thoughts Newsletter". I was surprised to get a qualified feedback from Bill Peasants whom I first met in "Lottery 101" group created by Klaus Joehle for developing intuition. Bill Pleasants: interested in dairy cows farming information on feed supplements(April 17, 2005) Thanks, Kostya. I am particularly interested in your dairy page. Last year I bought a cow and calf to get unprocessed milk which is difficult to get in this country and Canada. The quote about missing nutrients is tantalizing. Would you go a step further and find out Klaus' secret - maybe how he determined what feed supplements to use? Kostya: thanks for feedback on diary cows farming!Bill, thanks for the interest! I didn't expect to receive a feedback on diary cows farming so quickly. I will ask Klaus to share what he remembers about trace minerals research and will tell you what he answers. Klaus Joehle answer on trace minerals research and hay for cow feedingWhere do you get the trace minerals for cow feed?(April 18, 2005) In the US there is a company that sells trace minerals each individually so you can buy every trace mineral separately. Now all this goes back some 20 years and I don't remember the name. But it would not be hard to find if you look for it I am sure they have a web page now. If you buy premixed feed -- the feed companies add some trace minerals to the mix based on what they think an average animal will need. With right feeding and care dairy cow can do muchI purchased an average herd of milk cows and in under 3 years they became the 14th top herd across Canada for milk production. It would take a lot of pages to explain it all so to make it as simple as possible think about the nutritional needs of an animal the same as you would a person. Trace mineral drop concentrace. Advice on trace minerals for the person who has only one cowIf you have only one cow then buying the trace minerals would be expensive. So the best way to deal with it is to give your cow some variety in the diet as perhaps some apples, mix in some molasses in the feed. These things have the trace minerals in them that are missing in the hay fields also there is sugar in the fruits and the molasses with a cow producing milk requires, this of course will go against what most specialist will tell you. But if you use a little common sense you will see that the average hay field is been stressed over the years and the small variety of grass growing there will be lacking many trace minerals and also the natural sugars. If I had more time the next step would have been to add various beneficial herbs to the hay field. Klaus cows were giving milk and not loosing weightI had a group of nutritional scientists come to my farm to measure how much food each cow consumed in a day. When you have cows that produce a lot of milk it is hard to get them to eat enough food to maintain themselves. What they discovered is that my cows were fat even though producing enormous quantities of milk and that is because of the food that they were able to consume. Now again this would all take a long time to explain but to make it simple a cow can only eat so much according to there weight. So a 1500 lb cow can consume a maximum lb of food. What the scientist found was that my cows were eating more then should have been possible. I tried to explain to them how but they could not see past what was told to them what was possible. Sugar increased the ability to digest faster and more efficiently and constantly changing the variety in the diet gave them the appetite to eat more. Alfalfa and Timothy hay for a cowIt is of course more complicated then what I have just explained. So give your cow some fruit and left over vegetables and if you buy hay -- buy two types: one -- really good Alfalfa and one Timothy hay. The Alfalfa is for the protein and some sugars and the Timothy hay is for the roughage which is important. Salt and a brown mineral block. There are plants that are poisonous to cows so don't just feed here everything. There are many herbs she can eat. Unless she is starving most likely she will not eat anything poisonous.
